The children have settled back into school routines very well after the Christmas holiday and we are looking forward to a busy term ahead!
Health and Safety Week
Next week is our annual ‘Health & Safety Week’ with a programme of activity for the whole school with a range of visiting speakers and workshops. All classes will be taught Online Safety which is one of the key learning objectives identified for this year’s Health & Safety Week.
For KS1 pupils, there is a focus on Dental Health and Road Safety. Y2 will also participate in Scooter training from the London Borough of Richmond.
For KS2 pupils, Waitrose will be leading workshops on Healthy Eating and Mr Cowley, Online Safety Officer, will be speaking to the children about online safety. There will also be talks from our community Police Officers, as well as the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) about water safety.
Over the next 2 weeks, Safe Walking training has been arranged for Y3, and Y6 children will participate in Cycling Proficiency; both training sessions are being delivered by the London Borough of Richmond.
Letters have been sent home requesting permission for your child to participate in some of these activities, including training delivered by the borough. If permission has not been received for your child for a specific activity, your child may not be able to take part. Please ensure that all permission slips from letters sent home are returned to school by Monday 21st January.
And … to get the heart beating faster and raise fitness levels, all children (and staff!) will be taking part in a ‘Mile a Day’ challenge to complete 40 lengths of the astro turf each day. For an added incentive, we have set ourselves a school target to raise £400 that will be used to purchase a Digital Timer for our new fitness area in the Junior playground (Adventure Playground). If you would like to sponsor your child for taking part in this challenge, we would be very grateful to receive a contribution towards this target. Please send in your child’s sponsorship monies in a clearly marked envelope on Friday of next week, 25th January. Thank you.
As we mention our plans for our new fitness area, we are delighted that the first phase of the Adventure Playground improvements have been completed which have included grounds work and the removal of old equipment, and the creation of a larger open space. The children are of course more excited about Phase II … which is the installation of new fitness equipment! This would not have been possible without the tremendous fund raising effort of our PTA Cyclists last May who raised funds for this new equipment. We know that our cyclists are already in training for the May 2019 Sponsored Cycle and we thank you once again for your commitment to our school.
Finally, a reminder of upcoming dates.
Wednesday 23rd January at 9:15 a.m. Assembly led by Y2K. Parents are welcome.
Parents’ Talk with Peter Cowley, Online Safety Officer at Achieving for Children on Thursday 24th January at 7:00 p.m. Mr Cowley will give guidance to parents on how to put in place the correct measures for online safety and appropriate use of devices.
PTA Quiz Night on Thursday 7th February at 7:30 p.m. This is always a very enjoyable evening and a chance to test your general knowledge!
Finally, colder temperatures could be on their way. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing a warm coat, and that hats, scarves and both gloves are named so we can return these items if your child misplaces them.
Wishing you a lovely weekend.
