At St Elizabeth’s, we value the teaching of a Modern Foreign Language as we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience in preparation for future life. At the same time, this teaching instils a sense of pride in many of our pupils for whom English is an additional language.
In Key Stage 1, children are introduced to simple words and phrases from the languages spoken in our school community. The school celebrates European Languages Day each year and where possible children are encouraged to speak, sing and listen to stories in a variety of other languages.
In Key Stage 2, all children are taught French by a specialist Modern Foreign Language Teacher. Teaching is based on encouraging as much verbal communication as possible and developing good pronunciation and confidence in speaking and listening. Year 6 pupils also go on a residential visit to France in the Summer Term.
