Curriculum Information for Parents and Carers – Year 3 Autumn Term 2026
The Autumn Term is here and we would like to share with you a summary of what your child is learning in class. We would also like to share some ways that you can support your child at home.
RE
In RE, this term, Year 3 will explore Creation and Covenant, focusing on the Christian belief that God created a good world and called humans into a special relationship with Him. Through the Genesis creation account, Psalm 8 and St Francis’ Canticle of Creation, we will learn how every person is made in the image of God, why rest is important, and how Christian beliefs support human dignity, fairness, and Fairtrade.
Catholic Social Teaching
- Care for Creation: We will learn how God calls us to look after the planet – to be Stewards of Creation.
- Preferential Option for the Poor: We will learn how God calls us to look for those in need and to work hard to support them as best we can.
English
In English, we will be reading the fascinating book Tin Forest by Helen Ward, exploring how we can recycle rubbish and look after an area in our local environment. We will focus on writing an informative and persuasive leaflet. We will then read Leon and the Place Between, by Angela McAllister. Based on this book, we will be writing our own version of part of the story. We will also read The BFG by Roald Dahl and write a fantasy adventure story using a range of storytelling devices. Our last book this term will be the Barnabus Project by Eric Fan and Terry Fan, which we will use to inspire us to write a pet shop brochure.
We will be developing our oracy skills using discussion guidelines and active listening.
In grammar, we will be focusing on sentence punctuation; using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time, place and cause and plurals; introducing paragraphs to group sentences; expanded noun phrases; using the simple past tense and present perfect form of verbs.
We will practise writing using the school handwriting style focusing on letter shape, size and joins.
Our spellings will focus on spelling patterns which relate to the Y3 and Y4 list of Common Exception Words (tricky spelling words). We will look at root words, prefixes (letter strings added to the start of a root word) and suffixes (word endings). We will also look at homophones (words that sound the same but are spelt differently) and near homophones.
