Curriculum Information for Parents and Carers – Year 4 Summer Term 2024

The Summer Term is here and we would like to share with you a summary of what your child will be learning in class.  We would also like to share some ways that you can support your child at home.

Detailed information about the topics can be found in the Knowledge Organisers.  The Knowledge Organisers contain the key vocabulary and learning for each topic and you can look at these with your child over the course of the term. 

English

Summer Half Term 1: Our class text will be Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’.  During our English sessions, we will be planning and participating in a debate and improving our letter writing skills as we put ourselves in the shoes of the protagonist.

Summer Half Term 2: Our two class texts will be ‘Tuesday’ by David Wiesner and ‘A Nest full of Stars’ by James Berry.  We will write our own scene of a play and create a chronological report which links to our Science topic.  We will enjoy writing and performing poems.

Mathematics

Throughout the term, the children will be preparing for their Multiplication Check in June.

Decimals: This term, we will be exploring decimals in more depth.  We will learn to compare decimals and round decimals to the nearest whole number by considering their position on a number line.

Money: We will learn that the decimal point separates the pounds from the pence.  We will round money to the nearest 10p and £1 and will start to add and subtract simple amounts of money.

Time: We will develop our ability to convert between units of time and will solve problems using new concepts.

Statistics: We will be exposed to a range of ways in which information and data can be presented and interpreted.  We will explore pictograms, bar charts, tables and line graphs.

Geometry: We will learn about different types of angles and coordinates.

RE

Summer Half Term 1: We will learn about Pentecost and understand why the apostles spread the Good News.  We will learn about what happens during the Introductory, Communion and Concluding Rites and explain why Christians attend the celebration of the Eucharist.

Summer Half Term 2: In our Other Faiths topic, we will learn about Hinduism.  We will learn about their holy books and how their sacred writings guide people’s lives.

Science

Summer Half Term 1: We will explore classification and changing habitats.  We will learn how to group animals and plants in a variety of ways and recognise and describe different habitats and their inhabitants.

Summer Half Term 2: We will explore a scientist's study and focus on enquiry skills.

History

In History this term, we will explore how and why Crime and Punishment has changed over time.  We will utilise a variety of sources of evidence to develop our knowledge and understanding of the different time periods.  Within this, we will look at some small case studies in more depth to understand triggers for change.

Geography

In Geography this term, we will learn what rivers are and how they are used.  We will explore the physical features of a river and list some problems around rivers.  We will make a judgement on the environmental quality in a river environment and make suggestions on how a river environment could be improved.

Computing

In Computing, we will be learning about Computational Thinking.  We will explore how computational thinking can help to solve problems and apply computational thinking to problems.  We will also learn about data handling and use these skills to create a video that includes weather forecast information.  We will develop our understanding of Online Safety.  We will understand the difference between fact, opinion and belief and recognise these online.​​

French

This term, we will learn to describe our eye and hair colour as well as the vocabulary for seasons of the year, different types of weather conditions and the associated items of clothing.

Music

Summer Half Term 1: We will be composing a ‘Nature Composition’ using the pentatonic scale and graphic scores as inspiration.

Summer Half Term 2: We will be exploring Music Technology through the use of Bandlab, with a particular focus on loops.

PE

Swimming: We will be learning to use a range of strokes effectively over a distance of 25 metres (front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke).

Rounders: We will learn how to score points by striking a ball into space and running around cones or bases. When fielding, we will learn how to play in different fielding roles.  We will focus on developing throwing, catching and batting skills.

Athletics: We will be learning to throw and jump for distance, whilst demonstrating power and control, running at different speeds and preparing for the KS2 Sports Day events.

Art

In Art this term, we will be exploring craft and design.  We will select imagery and colours to create a mood board with a defined theme and colour palette and understand different methods of creating printed fabric in creative industries.

Design and Technology

In our textiles topic this term, we will learn about the main types of fastenings and state their advantages and disadvantages.  We will be improving our sewing skills by creating a book cover with a fastening.

RHSE (Relationship, Health and Sex Education)

In RHE this term, we will learn some coping strategies and explore how to prepare for new changes.  We will explore the Christian understanding of eternal life and reflect compassionately on the complexities of grief and consider ways to support ourselves and others.  We will be learning about money and understand some practicalities of managing money including different payment methods, budgeting and keeping track of spending and how our choices can impact on our lives and the lives of others.

Educational Visits

As part of our Science topic this term, the children will be visited by The Zoolab on 8th May 2024, where they will learn more about different animals’ habitats and what they need to survive.
