Year 2

Welcome to our Year 2 Class Page.

Curriculum Information for Parents and Carers – Year 2 Autumn Term 2026

The Autumn Term is here and we would like to share with you a summary of what your child will be learning in class.  We would also like to share some ways that you can support your child at home.

RE

We will follow the Lighting the Path programme, beginning with Branch 1: Creation and Covenant. We will learn some of the different parts of The Bible. We will hear the story of Noah and will focus on God’s promise to Noah in the sign of a rainbow. We will be introduced to Psalms and learn that they are prayers of praise. We will learn that the church teaches us that we have the responsibility to take care of God’s world through Stewardship. We will learn that Baptism is a sign of Jesus’ love and a welcome into the Christian family.

In Branch 2, Prophecy and Promise, we will learn about the role of the Holy Spirit in the Christmas story in Luke's Gospel. We will be introduced to  John the Baptist and begin to explore how he and other prophets helped prepare for God's plan. We will explore Advent as a season of hope and recognise how Christians respond to God’s promises. We will be introduced to the prayer 'The Magnificat'.

Catholic Social Teaching

  • Care for Creation: We will learn how God calls us to look after the planet – to be Stewards of Creation.
  • Preferential Option for the Poor: We will learn how God calls us to look for those in need and to work hard to support them as best we can.
English

Autumn Half Term 1: Through our class text, 'The Bear Under the Stairs', we will explore themes of fear by writing letters, creative stories, and an information report about bears. Our second class text will be ‘The Bear and the Piano’. This will allow us to write prediction statements, short news reports, and our own story about a music-playing animal.

Autumn Half Term 2: Our class text will be ‘Wolves’.  During our English sessions, we will investigate facts and fictions about wolves and write an informative safety leaflet for the townsfolk. Through our exploration of ‘Jim in the Beanstalk’, we will retell Jim's adventure and write our own creative sequel to a classic story.

Mathematics

Number and Place Value: We will develop and refine the following mathematical concepts and skills: revisit numbers to 20; count objects to 100 by making 10s; recognise tens and ones; use a place value chart and partition numbers to 100; write numbers to 100 in words and expanded form; add 10s and 1s on a number line to 100; estimate numbers on a number line; order objects and numbers; count in 2s, 5s and 10s; count in 3s.

Science

Materials: In this topic, we will explore the different properties of a variety of materials. We will increase our scientific vocabulary and use scientific enquiry to deepen understanding.

Life Cycles: Within this topic, we will learn that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. We will also find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air) and describe the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene.

History

Remembrance - Local Heroes: In this topic, we will learn about the lives of some of the most significant people in the history of our locality.

Geography

Hot and Cold Places: In this topic, we will look at different places around the world with contrasting climates. We will look at both human and physical features present in these places and learn to ask enquiry-based questions.

Computing

Autumn Half Term 1: What is a computer? We will learn to name some computer peripherals and their functions and explain that technology follows instructions. We will design an invention that includes inputs and outputs.

Autumn Half Term 2: Algorithms and debugging We will be able to explain what an algorithm is, follow an algorithm and explain what inputs and outputs are. We will decompose a design into steps and identify bugs in an algorithm and how to fix them.

Music

Autumn Half Term 1: Keyboard (Rhythm and pulse) - We will create our own rhythms and aurally identify different rhythms. We will undertake pulse work in 4/4 and 3/4 time by tapping the pulse on our chests. We will accurately identify the difference between ta and titi rhythms. We will use keyboards to cement knowledge.

Autumn Half Term 2: Nativity - We will develop our performance skills, including use of our diaphragm when singing and the ability to project our voice. We will work on singing posture and combining actions with music.

PE

Fundamental Skills: We will explore balancing, running, changing direction, jumping, hopping and skipping.

Sending and Receiving: We will develop throwing and catching, rolling, kicking, tracking and stopping a ball. We will work with a range of different sized balls and apply skills individually, in pairs and in small groups.

Ball Skills: We will explore ball skills, such as hitting a target, dribbling with both hands and feet and kicking a ball.

Dance: We will explore space and how our body can move to express an idea, mood, character or feeling. We will explore knowledge of travelling actions and use them in relation to a stimulus. We will use counts of 8 consistently to keep in time with the music and a partner.

Art

Craft and Design - Map it out: In this topic, we will begin to generate ideas from a wider range of stimuli, exploring different media and techniques. We will use our hands and tools with confidence when cutting, shaping and joining paper, card and malleable materials.

Design and Technology

Mechanisms - Making a moving monster: In this topic, we will design a moving monster and select and assemble materials to create the planned features. We will use levers, linkages and pivots in the final design.

RHE (Relationship and Health Education)

We will explore that we all have different feelings at different times and different likes and dislikes too. We will also learn about consequences of choices and what we do when it all goes wrong.

How you can help your child at home
  • Reading daily and talking about the book - recalling what has happened
  • Completing Phonics/Spellings Homework
  • Helping with Maths homework
  • Providing support with half termly projects
  • Lots of talking! This helps build understanding of the world around us, as well as vocabulary
