Science

At St Elizabeth’s, we want our children to become the scientists of the future!  We aim to achieve this by encouraging their excitement and curiosity, developing their scientific enquiry skills and increasing their scientific knowledge of the world around them.  Our Science curriculum is practical and inspiring and Science is taught both as a discrete subject and through links with other subjects with an emphasis on considering real problems.

Children start their scientific journey when they join us in Reception class.  They explore and find out about the world around them and begin to ask questions about it.  As the curriculum progresses through KS1 and KS2, children develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through a variety of topics.

Our Science curriculum is designed to enable children to develop the practical skills required to undertake simple experiments following the scientific method.  This involves using both everyday objects and scientific equipment to observe and record findings from experiments, as well as organise and analyse data.  Children develop proficiency in undertaking experiments, ultimately using their growing scientific knowledge to devise and carry out their own investigations.

Children develop a broad knowledge of how Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future.  Children learn how scientists contribute to our cultural heritage by studying a diverse range of scientists.  Visits by local scientists and those in science-based professions are sought and welcomed, allowing us to raise aspirations and inspire children to envisage themselves as scientists.

Visits to museums, farms, zoos, gardens, rivers and parks in our locality and further afield are an important part of our Science curriculum.
