Year 1
Welcome to our Year 1 Class Page.
Curriculum Information for Parents and Carers – Year 1 Summer Term 2026
The Summer Term is underway and we would like to share with you a summary of what your child is learning in class. We would also like to share some ways that you can support your child at home.
Detailed information about the topics can be found in the Knowledge Organisers at the bottom of this page. The Knowledge Organisers contain the key vocabulary and learning for each topic and you can look at these with your child over the course of the term.
RE
In our Branch 5, “To the End of the Earth,” we will develop a simple, narrative understanding of the events following the Resurrection of Jesus. We will explore how the earliest followers of Jesus came together as a community to continue His work “to the ends of the earth.”
In Branch 6, “Dialogue and Encounter,” we will learn about different religious worldviews, with a focus on Judaism and Islam. We will also explore parish life through key persona such as Father Louis, Maria the Musician, and Alison the Reader.
Catholic Social Teaching

- Dignity of the Worker: Through the CST principle of Dignity of the Worker, we will learn about and respect the work that people do and want to ensure that workers are fairly treated and fairly paid.
English
We will be exploring a number of high quality picture books to help us practise and apply our writing skills to: write a diary in the role of a character; develop and write questions; write a set of instructions; retell events using time adverbials; explore and perform poetry; write a non-chronological report.
Mathematics
Multiplication & Division: Using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays for simple multiplication and division.
Fractions: Recognise, find and name half and a quarter as part of an object, shape and quantity.
Position and Direction: Describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns.
Number and Place Value: Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number. Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals. Count in multiples of twos, fives and tens. Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones). Solve addition and subtraction problems.

Plants: We will be looking at the structure of a range of local plants, including trees. We will explore, identify and name the types of plants and trees we see in our local area, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
Growing & Cooking: We will be asking questions and using observations to explore where fruit and vegetables come from.
Planting: We will continue to observe the growth of what we have planted and notice how a larger range of plants can grow outside as the weather changes.
Seasonal Changes: We will continue to explore changes that occur with each season.
History
In Summer Half Term 1, we will develop our knowledge of events beyond living memory and reinforce our chronological understanding by looking at significant events in the history of flight on a timeline. We will be learning about the individuals who contributed to the history of flight.
Geography
In Summer Half Term 2, we will be using a world map to start recognising continents, oceans and countries outside the UK with a focus on Europe (Spain). We will identify physical features of Murcia using aerial photographs and maps before identifying human features, through exploring land use. We will compare the human and physical features of Murcia to features in the local area and make a simple map using data collected through fieldwork.
Music
Summer Half Term 1: Samba Music! We will be developing our performance skills and understanding of music from around the world by playing Samba music together. We will be learning the names of the different samba instruments and playing them together, practically cementing our knowledge of pitch and rhythms and challenging ourselves by having to play complex polyrhythms together!
Summer Half Term 2: Is a recap of everything we have covered so far this year – rhythmic notation, pulse work, and pitch – specifically with a focus on the koday so, mi and la pitches, whilst introducing parts of pitch notation in preparation for Year 2.

This term in Computing, we will explore digital imagery by using iPads to take photographs, create a sequence of pictures, and edit images to improve them. We will learn how pictures can be used to tell a story and how digital tools can change images. In an introduction to programming, we will learn what an algorithm is through unplugged activities. We will follow and create simple instructions and practise debugging by finding and fixing mistakes, helping to develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
RHE (Relationship and Health Education)
