Year 2
Welcome to our Year 2 Class Page.
Curriculum Information for Parents and Carers – Year 2 Spring Term 2026
The Spring Term is here and we would like to share with you a summary of what your child will be learning in class. We would also like to share some ways that you can support your child at home.
Detailed information about the topics can be found in the Knowledge Organisers. The Knowledge Organisers contain the key vocabulary and learning for each topic and you can look at these with your child over the course of the term.
RE
This half term, we will explore the life of Jesus, bridging the gap between His birth and His sacrifice on the cross. By looking at stories from Luke’s Gospel, the children will learn how Jesus used parables and miracles to show people the nature of God and His identity as the "incarnation of God."
We will also reflect on the Baptism of Jesus, discussing how prayer and the symbol of water represent cleansing and new beginnings. Finally, the class will consider the importance of making good choices and the consequences that follow, providing a foundation for understanding the events leading up to Easter.
Catholic Social Teaching
- Solidarity and Peace: We will be learning that by working together we can build a just and peaceful world. We will recognise our interconnectedness as one human family.
- Community and participation: We will learn that through our participation and putting our 'Faith in Action' in our homes, school and community that we are working towards the common good and ensuring our words and actions benefit all.
English
Spring Half Term 1: Our class text will be ‘Leaf’. During our English lessons, we will be looking at first person language and descriptive writing. We will focus on expanded noun phrases and personal pronouns.
Spring Half Term 2: Our class text will be ‘Lila and the Secret of the Rain’. During our English sessions, we will be refining our inference skills, describing characters and settings and writing a narrative. We will also use our learning in science to write explanation texts.
Mathematics
Money: We will learn to count money, compare amounts of money, calculate with money and make a pound.
Multiplication and Division: We will recognise and make equal groups, use arrays, divide by and multiply by 10, 2, and 5.
Measurement - Length and Height: We will be measuring in centimetres and metres, comparing and ordering lengths and heights.
Measurement - Mass, Capacity and Temperature: We will be measuring in grams and kilograms, comparing volume and capacity and measuring in millilitres and litres.
Science
Spring Half Term 1: This half term, we will explore the fascinating world of habitats by learning to distinguish between things that are living, dead, or have never been alive. We will investigate various global and local environments to discover how different plants and animals are specially suited to their surroundings.
Spring Half Term 2: Our topic will be Microhabitats. We will identify and name a variety of plants and animals and recall that minibeasts live in microhabitats. We will describe microhabitats and their conditions and also describe how microhabitats provide for the basic needs of animals and plants.
History
In Spring Half Term 1, we will explore the lives of famous figures who changed the world through discovery and exploration. By creating a historical timeline, we will compare explorers from the distant past, such as Christopher Columbus, with modern-day adventurers like Ellen MacArthur.
Geography
In Spring Half Term 2, our topic is ‘Why is our world wonderful?’. We will learn to identify and locate characteristics of the UK on a map. We will also identify human and physical features and place them on a world map. We will begin to explain the difference between oceans and seas and be able to name and locate the five oceans on a world map.
Computing
Spring Half Term 1: Our topic is Algorithms and Debugging. Within this unit, we will decompose a game to predict the algorithms and be able to give a definition for ‘decomposition’. We will learn to write clear and precise algorithms and create algorithms to solve problems. We will begin to use loops in algorithms to make code more efficient and explain what abstraction is.
Spring Half Term 2: Our topic is Programming using Scratch Jr. We will explore a new application independently and begin to explain what the blocks on Scratch Jr do and use them for a purpose. We will begin to recognise a loop in coding and why it is useful and learn how to use a code to create an animation of an animal moving. We will also use code to follow and create an algorithm, program code to run ‘on tap’ and explain the role of the blocks in a program we have created.
Music
Spring Half term 1: We will be solidifying our knowledge of treble clef notation through singing games, listening and playing of instruments - especially the ocarina.
Spring Half term 2: Instruments of the Orchestra - we will be learning about what instruments appear in an orchestra, what they sound like and what famous composers used them.
PE
Invasion Games: We will be developing the principles of defending and attacking. We will use and develop skills such as sending and receiving with both feet and hands, as well as dribbling with both feet and hands.
Gymnastics: In this unit we will explore and develop basic gymnastic actions on the floor and using apparatus. We will develop gymnastic skills of jumping, rolling, balancing and travelling individually and in combination to create short sequences and movement phrases.
Net and Wall: We will develop our understanding of the principles of net and wall games, such as using the ready position to defend space and sending the ball away from an opponent to maximise our scoring chances.
Target Games: We will learn how to score points and play to the rules. We will develop the skills of throwing, rolling, kicking and striking towards targets. We will begin to self-manage our own games, selecting and applying the skills we have learnt.
Art
In Spring Half Term 1, we will be exploring painting and mixed media in our topic, ‘Life in colour.’ We will try different tools to recreate a texture and decide which tool works best. We will name primary and secondary colours and will be able to discuss and make predictions about what will happen when two colours mix.
Design and Technology
In Spring Half Term 2, we will be learning about food and what makes a balanced diet. We will be able to name the main food groups and identify foods that belong to each group. We will design a healthy wrap based on a food combination that works well together.
RHE (Relationship and Health Education)
In RSE this term, we will be learning about the human life cycle and how we have already changed and grown. We will also explore the story of ‘The Prodigal Son’ to show that God loves us and nothing we can do will stop him from loving us.
