Music

Music is a skills-based subject that can inspire, challenge and evoke wonderful creativity within pupils.  At St Elizabeth's, we value Music extremely highly, both in the taught curriculum, and in the wider musical life of the school which includes a rich variety of liturgies, performances and extra-curricular opportunities.

It is the aim of our Music Curriculum to make music a subject for all children, by helping them find the area of music that they love the most.  This may be: performing in front of others; creating music through technology or other means; listening to and analysing pieces of music from many genres and cultures; or through exploring the social background in which the music was created.

All the Music lessons within the school are delivered by a Music specialist teacher.  The Music curriculum has been designed with a clear intent for progression to higher music learning and skills.

All children are given the opportunity to perform their musical skills through: class assemblies, annual class music concerts, the KS1 Nativity, the KS2 Carol Concert, the Y4 Passion Play and the Y6 production.  We also collaborate with local schools in the 'Big Sing' and the Richmond Schools Proms.

Extra-curricular opportunities are vital to the musical life of the school at St Elizabeth’s.  These enable children to develop confidence, team building, listening and performance skills.  There are multiple choirs within the school; Infant Choir and Junior Choir are open to every child who wishes to join, and Schola Cantorum is an auditioned choir in Year 5 and Year 6.  This group of children lead singing worship in the Masses and liturgies and often sing in two and three part harmonies.  We also have a school orchestra, open to children of all ages, and any child who is having instrumental lessons, at any level, is encouraged to join.

We also work in partnership with the Richmond Music Trust, which enables all Year 4 pupils to learn the clarinet or saxophone.  Individual instrumental tuition in violin, guitar, piano, clarinet and saxophone is also offered by the Richmond Music Trust.
